Shop from small businesses around you, all in one place.

"smol" is a mobile application that can help others discover and support small businesses. This project was submitted as an entry to the Adobe x MTV Creative Jam, which lasted around 24 hours. At this point in time, most of my prior experience has been with UX Engineering/front-end development with limited knowledge in Figma. Thus, I was extremely fortunate to work with Vivian, who had far more experience than me in UI/UX Design (view her portfolio/work here).

There are many small businesses online. However, they are difficult to find as information is scattered across different platforms. Those who want to shop from small businesses would have to go through extra lengths to find ones that suit their needs.

Problem Statement

There are many small businesses online. However, they are difficult to find as information is scattered across different platforms. Those who want to shop from small businesses would have to go through extra lengths to find ones that suit their needs.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made it difficult for small businesses to stay open, and a survey shows that 43% of small businesses have temporarily closed.

Our app “smol” addresses these issues by helping users find nearby or online small businesses to support, along with listing the causes they support. This solution addresses a huge target audience, both the progressive young and old, and helps small business owners by matching their values to the user. Our prototype solves the problem in an innovative way because our interface is simple and easy to use, removing the extra steps you would have to take trying to find small businesses on other platforms.

Solution Summary

In 24 hours, we were able to finish a working prototype of a mobile application. Below are some screenshots of some of the screens which I designed.
